Diaspora Co. began with one spice and one named farm partner. Sana Javeri Kadri founded the company in 2017 with Pragati Turmeric from Prabhu Kasaraneni. In her founding account, the launch follows a return to Mumbai in 2016 and months of farm visits. Diaspora Co. / Founding story
Where the turmeric comes from
The Pragati Turmeric page identifies Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, as its origin. It names Kasaraneni and describes his work with scientists at the Indian Institute of Spices Research. The account also describes the farm itself: turmeric growing alongside marigolds, banana trees and black rice. Diaspora Co. / Pragati Turmeric
How Diaspora Co. sources its spices
Diaspora Co. describes a sourcing process built around small family farms in India and Sri Lanka. It says new spices go through farm visits, lab testing and tastings, and that a sold-out harvest can mean waiting until the next season. These are the company's descriptions of its own sourcing practices. Diaspora Co. / Sourcing model
A recipe from the farm
There is another way to meet the Kasaraneni family: through Venkata Narasamma Kasaraneni's nimmakara pulihora, an Andhra lemon rice recipe published by Diaspora Co. The introduction connects the dish to ingredients the family grows, including turmeric and sesame. The recipe is excerpted from The Diaspora Spice Co. Cookbook.
